Independent Reading Tips
You’re in charge of your independent reading journey! It’s okay to skim, skip, or stop if a book doesn’t feel right for you, but don’t shy away from a little challenge. The best reading stretches your thinking and keeps you engaged. And remember, reading in a community isn’t about judgment and comparison, it’s about sharing ideas, discovering new perspectives, and celebrating what each reader brings to the table.
You’re in charge. Pick books that interest you, and don’t be afraid to change directions if one isn’t working for you.
Challenge yourself. The best reads make you think, feel, or see something in a new way.
Use the “skim, skip, or stop” rule. It’s okay to move past parts (or whole books) that don’t feel right for you.
Mix it up. Try different genres, authors, and formats—fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, or audiobooks all count.
Set small goals. Read at your own pace. Some books take time; others fly by. Both are part of being a reader.
Share your reading. Talking about books helps you see new perspectives and discover titles you might not pick up otherwise.
No judgment zone! Everyone’s reading journey looks different. It’s about finding what fits you, not comparing with others.
Keep an open mind. Sometimes the books that surprise you the most end up being your favorites.
